On June 6, 2026, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded 37 journalists and media professionals from both Ukraine and abroad in recognition of their outstanding contributions to journalism and their efforts in truthfully reporting on Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The ceremony, coinciding with Journalist Day, highlighted the critical role of media in conflict zones. Among the awardees was Viktoria Bobrova, a producer and lieutenant in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who was honored posthumously with the Order of Merit, III class. Bobrova’s valor extended beyond journalism as she saved a comrade during an artillery attack and contributed to the documentary “Warriors of the Mountains,” which illuminates the lives of mountain assault units. She tragically lost her life in April 2026 during an operation in the Kharkiv region. The awards also celebrated the bravery and professionalism of journalists who have faced the perils of war firsthand. Yuliia Kyriienko-Merinova, a war correspondent for TSN, received the Order of Princess Olga, II class, for her relentless reporting from the front lines. Similarly, Pavlo Pavlov, a camera operator frequently under fire, was recognized for his crucial role in documenting war crimes, a testament to the indispensable role of journalists in illuminating truths and aiding justice. In addition to Ukrainian nationals, several foreign journalists were recognized for their dedication and bravery. American journalist Zarina Zabrisky and German war correspondent Ibrahim Naber were both awarded the Order of Merit, III class, for their in-depth coverage and personal sacrifices made while reporting from combat zones. This event not only underscores the significant risks journalists undertake to deliver accurate news but also the profound impact of their work in shaping international understanding and response to global crises.
