In a significant crackdown under “Jack’s Law,” Far North police have successfully seized over 100 weapons, as part of ongoing efforts to stem knife-related crimes. The law, which empowers officers to use handheld metal detectors, has led to the scanning of 8,902 individuals since its implementation on July 18, 2025. “Jack’s Law” was named after 17-year-old Jack Beasley, who tragically lost his life to a stabbing in 2019. The legislation allows police to perform scans in various public settings including entertainment venues, shopping centers, and public transport hubs. These preventative measures have not only led to numerous weapon confiscations but also function as a deterrent against carrying knives and other dangerous items in public. Acting Chief Superintendent Paul Hart emphasized the proactive nature of these patrols, highlighting their importance in maintaining the safety of community spaces like the Cairns Central Business District. “Our aim is not just to enforce the law but to ensure that the public can enjoy their time in our community spaces without fear,” he stated. Community members are encouraged to report suspicious activities anonymously through Crime Stoppers or Policelink. These efforts underscore the community and police partnership in enhancing safety and reducing crime. Post navigation Teens Nabbed in Broadbeach Heist
