Parliament Sets Agenda on EU Security

The European Parliament is scheduled to debate democratic resilience, defence readiness and rising security threats during its plenary session on Tuesday, Sept. 15. The agenda includes discussions on foreign interference, hybrid attacks, migration and the escalating conflict in the Middle East.

MEPs will debate the findings of the Parliament’s Special Committee on the European Democracy Shield at 10:30 a.m., followed by a vote at noon. The report recommends measures to protect EU institutions from malicious interference, hybrid attacks and disinformation. A press conference with Parliament President Roberta Metsola and the report’s senior lawmakers is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

The day’s agenda also includes debates on legislation intended to simplify defence-related permits, intra-EU transfers and security procurement. A separate discussion will address hybrid attacks attributed to Russia and other countries. Foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas is also expected to brief lawmakers on developments in the conflict between the United States and Iran, including tensions affecting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Other scheduled topics include the use of migration pressure at Ceuta, the effects of heatwaves, wildfires and drought, and a statement concerning the funeral of former Bosnian Serb commander Ratko Mladić. Lawmakers are also due to vote on climate and emissions-trading measures, financial regulatory appointments, parliamentary immunity requests and a report on the global role of the euro.
