Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced more than $2 billion in defense, energy and business agreements during a joint press conference on Sept. 10, according to Ukraine’s presidential office. The package includes more than $1 billion in Canadian government support for Ukraine’s defense, including Patriot air-defense missiles, F-16 ammunition and drone co-production. Zelenskyy said the agreement, described as a “Drone Deal,” would strengthen Ukraine’s military capabilities while giving Canada greater access to technologies developed through modern warfare. The two leaders also discussed energy cooperation ahead of winter, sanctions targeting Russia’s ballistic missile production and measures aimed at helping return Ukrainian children allegedly taken to Russia. Zelenskyy said Canada was preparing additional sanctions for the fall and supporting initiatives to assist with the children’s reintegration. Canada will also contribute $40 million to a planned Ukrainian Veterans Fund, Zelenskyy said. The countries signed an initial document toward developing a long-term, 100-year partnership agreement, with additional cooperation expected in energy and other sectors.
