Kyiv Forum Seeks Tougher Russia Sanctions

Representatives from 22 countries and the European Union are meeting in Kyiv for a two-day forum focused on assessing sanctions against Russia and developing measures to strengthen restrictions. The discussions cover energy, military-related components, financial institutions and maritime transportation.

Participants include officials from Ukraine, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Japan and other European countries. Vladyslav Vlasiuk, adviser to the Ukrainian president on sanctions policy, said the forum was intended to facilitate the exchange of assessments and proposals among sanctions coordinators.

According to Vlasiuk, Ukraine is highlighting foreign-made electronic components identified in Russian Shahed drones, with about 100 components reportedly traced to overseas suppliers. He also said sanctions and Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries contributed to a significant decline in Russia’s crude oil exports in July and August.

The forum is also addressing potential sanctions against buyers of Russian oil, suppliers linked to Russia’s military-industrial complex and entities in third countries. Discussions include an anti-ballistic sanctions package and the European Union’s proposed 22nd sanctions package, targeting manufacturers and suppliers involved in producing Russian ballistic missiles.
