President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine announced on June 5, 2026, the continuation of prisoner exchanges with Russia, successfully bringing home 186 Ukrainians, most of whom are military personnel. These individuals had been captured in various conflict zones including Donetsk, Mariupol, and the Luhansk regions. This year alone, Ukraine has managed to secure the return of 1,429 people through seven different exchanges.

President Zelenskyy expressed gratitude towards the teams responsible for negotiating these exchanges and praised the efforts of Ukrainian soldiers who have facilitated these returns by capturing Russian soldiers. He emphasized that despite the challenges, these exchanges are crucial and ongoing, with more stages being prepared.

In addition to updates on prisoner exchanges, President Zelenskyy criticized the Russian response to peace efforts, describing it as a preference for war over peace. He noted that the Russian leadership’s stance was apparent in their weak response and unwillingness to change their approach to the ongoing conflict. Amidst these tensions, Zelenskyy affirmed that Ukraine continues to prepare for diplomatic meetings with European and American partners, aimed at bolstering support and strategizing further steps.

The Ukrainian leader also highlighted the significant achievements of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU), particularly the Special Operations Center “A”, which has been instrumental in inflicting heavy casualties on enemy forces. As Ukraine defends its independence, new operations and strategies are being approved to maintain momentum and security.
