In a decisive move, the European Parliament has adopted a strategic report urging the European Union to intensify its relations with Latin America and the Caribbean. The report, approved during a plenary session on Wednesday, emphasizes a more strategic and value-driven partnership to navigate the complex global geopolitical landscape.

The adopted report outlines a comprehensive strategy to counter democratic backsliding and external geopolitical pressures by fostering a closer alliance with Latin America and the Caribbean. It proposes enhancing multilateralism, supporting civil society, and utilizing the Global Gateway initiative alongside trade agreements to mitigate the influence of rival global powers like China and Russia.

Economic ties are also a focal point, with the EU-Mercosur Partnership Agreement highlighted as a critical element in maintaining the EU’s influence in the region. The report calls for unified action on international crises, including the situations in Ukraine and Gaza, urging collective condemnations and coordinated peace efforts.

Rapporteur Davor Ivo Stier emphasized the necessity of this partnership, stating, “Given the evolving global landscape, it is crucial to strengthen the historic bond between the EU and Latin America, reinforcing our alliance grounded in shared commitments and common values. Our partnership must deepen through genuine cooperation with a goal of strengthening the transatlantic area of peace, democracy, and prosperity.” This strategy not only aims to bolster political ties but also to ensure sustainable development aligned with EU standards on human rights and environmental sustainability.
