In a significant crackdown on illegal migration, the Spanish Guardia Civil, with support from Europol, has dismantled a sophisticated criminal network smuggling migrants from Algeria to Europe. The operation, which unfolded in several Spanish cities between June 17 and 19, resulted in 14 arrests and the seizure of substantial assets used in the smuggling operations. Investigations revealed that the network, led by a Moroccan national, was intricately organized with branches handling various aspects of the smuggling process. The group used legitimate maritime trading companies as fronts to acquire equipment and funds, spending over EUR 1 million on high-speed boats for their operations. These boats, equipped with powerful engines, were a key component in transporting migrants on perilous journeys across the Mediterranean. Authorities uncovered the network’s use of ‘hawaladars’ to facilitate the movement of funds, further highlighting the complexity and reach of the criminal activities. During the raids, police seized 15 speedboats, boat hull molds, maritime equipment, firearms, and over EUR 68,000 in cash. Migrants were charged up to EUR 7,000 each for the dangerous crossings. Europol played a crucial role in the operation, offering real-time information exchange and analytical support. An expert was deployed to Spain to assist local authorities, ensuring effective coordination and timely action. The dismantling of this network marks a significant step in combating illegal migration routes into the EU.
