Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed energy assistance, civilian protection and joint weapons production with Portuguese President António José Seguro during a meeting in Madrid on Nov. 5, according to Ukraine’s presidential office.

Zelenskyy thanked Seguro for his condolences following a Russian strike on a school in Komyshuvakha, where people had gathered to receive humanitarian aid. Search-and-rescue operations were in their fourth day, with 43 people reported killed and dozens more potentially trapped under the rubble, the Ukrainian president said.

One person previously reported missing was found alive, Zelenskyy added. He said Russian drone and missile attacks continue to damage Ukrainian cities and communities, while extensive destruction of energy infrastructure has made restoration efforts difficult.

The two presidents discussed ways Portugal could support Ukraine’s energy system and help protect civilians. They also considered opportunities for joint weapons production, with Zelenskyy saying Ukraine expects further Portuguese assistance.
