Queensland Police Service (QPS) officers are participating in the annual Emergency Services Lifeblood Drive, which runs from May 1 to July 31. This statewide initiative sees emergency personnel, including police officers, donate blood and plasma to help save lives.

Last year, QPS officers contributed a remarkable 658 donations, making them the leading emergency service group in Queensland for blood donations. Their efforts not only underscored their commitment to public service but also set a high benchmark in the friendly competition among emergency services.

Senior Constable Darin Carruthers, a veteran with 36 years of service and a rare AB negative blood type, emphasized the critical impact of these donations. “Every blood donation has the potential to save up to three lives, so by participating in the drive I’m helping to keep other Queenslanders safe,” he stated. Meanwhile, first-year constable Amber Johnson described her first-time donating experience as rewarding. She expressed her hopes to continue donating regularly, underlining the drive’s significance beyond her daily responsibilities.

The initiative not only bolsters the state’s blood reserves but also strengthens the bond among emergency services and the communities they serve. For those interested in contributing, details on how to donate can be found at the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood website. This drive is a poignant reminder of the power of community and the simple acts that can profoundly impact lives.
