In a recent operation in Bundaberg, local police have intensified efforts to enforce e-bike regulations, resulting in the seizure of two high-speed electric bikes that failed to meet legal standards. The crackdown occurred on April 24, around 6:50 PM on Bargara Road, where two men were intercepted while riding.

Upon inspection, Bundaberg Police determined that the bikes were capable of reaching speeds up to 90 km/h and lacked the necessary features of legal e-bikes, such as pedal assistance. These characteristics rather classify them as motorbikes. Consequently, a 21-year-old from Bundaberg South and a 23-year-old from Bundaberg East face charges related to operating unregistered and uninsured motorbikes without licenses. They are scheduled to appear in Bundaberg Magistrates Court on June 5.

Authorities have reiterated the legal requirements for e-bikes: a maximum continuous motor power output of 250 watts, motor assistance only while pedaling up to 25 km/h, and no throttle power beyond 6 km/h. This incident serves as a reminder to the public to ensure their e-mobility devices comply with the law to avoid similar legal repercussions. The community is encouraged to report any suspicious activities or non-compliant vehicles to Policelink or Crime Stoppers.
