The European Parliament is scheduled to announce the 2026 Sakharov Prize laureate and vote on a range of foreign policy, environmental and economic measures during its plenary session on Thursday, Oct. 22. Parliament President Roberta Metsola is expected to reveal the winner at noon. The finalists for the prize are the International Criminal Court and its officials; Tanzanian lawyer, political leader and human rights defender Tundu Lissu; and Iranian activists Taraneh and Romina Rahimi, representing people persecuted by Iran’s government. Members of the European Parliament will also vote on a resolution concerning Russian drone incursions and strikes on EU territory. The proposed text would hold Russia responsible for attacks on civilian vessels and call for stronger support for Romania and Bulgaria, including improved detection and tracking of hostile drones. Other votes will address the 2028-2034 Erasmus+ program, industrial emissions allowances, methane regulations, Houthi attacks and regional security, preparations for the 2026 UN climate conference in Antalya, and cohesion policy in the EU’s eastern border regions. Lawmakers are also scheduled to debate artificial-intelligence governance and proposed changes to rules covering cosmetics, chemicals, fertilisers and product labelling.
