Mount Isa Child Protection and Investigation Unit officers concluded Operation Xray Barani on Monday, May 19, resulting in a 56-year-old man from Karumba being charged with 40 historical child sex offences. The operation, spanning five months, aimed to investigate alleged offenses against seven children and two adults in Mackay and Mount Isa between 2002 and 2022.

The charges against the man include 14 counts of rape, 13 counts of indecent treatment of a child, five counts of deprivation of liberty, three counts of common assault, and several other serious offenses. Following his appearance in Mount Isa Magistrates Court, the man was remanded in custody pending further legal proceedings.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Shauna McIvor of the Mount Isa Child Protection and Investigation Unit praised the diligent work of the investigative team and commended the bravery of the victims who came forward to assist in holding the alleged perpetrator accountable. She emphasized the Queensland Police Service’s commitment to thoroughly investigating cases of sexual abuse, regardless of when they occurred.

Authorities urge individuals who have experienced sexual assault to report the incidents through various channels, including online forms, phone calls, or visits to a police station. Confidential support and counseling services are also available through the State-wide Sexual Assault Helpline and 1800 RESPECT hotline.

In light of this case, the Queensland Police Service continues to encourage victims of sexual abuse to come forward and seek justice. The investigation remains ongoing, with the man facing multiple serious charges as a result of Operation Xray Barani.
