New European Defense Coalition

In a significant development on July 13, 2026, leaders from ten European nations, including Ukraine, have officially announced the establishment of an Integrated Anti-Ballistic Missile Coalition. This coalition aims to enhance the continent’s defense capabilities against the growing threat of ballistic missiles.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, alongside representatives from Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, declared their commitment to this defensive initiative. The announcement followed a series of meetings in Paris, where these nations discussed the urgency of bolstering their defense mechanisms in response to recent security challenges.

The formation of the coalition was prompted by the evident insufficiency in current global anti-ballistic capabilities, as noted by President Zelenskyy. He emphasized that while efforts are underway in the United States to increase Patriot production, and Europe is expanding its SAMP/T, IRIS-T, and NASAMS production, there remains a significant gap between the existing defense infrastructure and the required capabilities to adequately safeguard the nations involved.

Additionally, the Coalition of the Willing, which also convened in Paris, reiterated their unwavering support for Ukraine amidst ongoing conflicts. This group, which has now expanded to include 40 countries with the recent inclusion of Moldova and North Macedonia, stressed the importance of a just and lasting peace for Ukraine, aligning with international law principles and ensuring European security interests.
