Queensland Police Service (QPS) has initiated a new crime reduction campaign, Operation Yankee Forge, focusing on high-crime areas in Cairns and across the state. Announced on February 27, 2026, the operation aims to diminish high-harm offenses such as robbery, unlawful use, and unlawful entry by enhancing police presence and activities in affected areas. The operation, which builds upon the achievements of the previous Operation Xray Everdeen, is set to be locally driven but centrally coordinated, ensuring that experienced local officers lead the efforts with additional support from specialized units like the State Flying Squad. Operation Xray Everdeen has already seen significant success, with over 2,060 offenders charged with nearly 7,000 criminal acts since August 2025. Acting Commissioner Brett Pointing, who recently visited Cairns to launch this initiative, expressed optimism about the impact of Operation Forge. “The approach of mixing high-visibility and covert operations has proven effective in reducing crime rates and will be a continued strategy,” he stated. The operation aims not only to tackle crime but also to enhance community relations throughout Queensland. In addition to ongoing police activities, several arrests have already been made under the new operation, demonstrating its immediate effect. Among these, a notable incident involved the police dog unit tracking down suspects linked to vehicle thefts, showcasing the diverse tactics being employed to combat crime. As Operation Yankee Forge progresses, Queensland Police remain committed to safeguarding communities and reducing the fear of crime among residents, promising stringent actions against those disrupting public safety.
