Townsville, Australia – A significant operation by the Townsville Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) has led to the arrest of over 30 individuals involved in copper wire theft across the region. Dubbed Operation Whiskey Biome, this initiative began in October 2024 and has since been pivotal in curbing thefts from key utility and communication services. Since its inception, the operation has seen charges laid against 33 people for over 164 related offenses. These thefts included significant incidents during preparations for Tropical Cyclone Koji in January 2025. Recently, two men were apprehended for an attempted theft in Deeragun, facing multiple charges and slated for a court appearance on February 13. The ongoing campaign has not only focused on immediate apprehensions but also on preventative measures. Detective Senior Sergeant Chris Caswell, officer in charge of Townsville CIB, emphasized the collaboration with local stakeholders, government agencies, and metal recyclers to monitor and deter copper theft activities. He highlighted the use of tactical and investigative techniques to adapt to the challenges posed by copper theft. The community is encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities around vulnerable sites like construction areas and telecommunications infrastructure. With the community’s cooperation and continued police efforts, the goal is to significantly reduce the occurrence and impact of copper thefts in Townsville and surrounding areas.
