On National Police Remembrance Day, Australians reflect on the sacrifices of police officers who have died in the line of duty. This year, special tribute is paid to Senior Constable Henry James Fetherston, who lost his life 140 years ago in Maryborough, Queensland. Senior Constable Fetherston, born in Ireland in 1859, followed his dream of becoming a police officer by moving to Australia and joining the Queensland Police Service in 1878. His dedication led to a promotion to senior constable in 1882, and he became a cherished member of the Maryborough community, even joining the local rowing club. Tragically, on February 22, 1885, at age 26, Fetherston suffered fatal injuries after being thrown from his horse during a routine ride. His name is now commemorated alongside fellow officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. As the nation pauses to honor these heroes, the Queensland Police Service reminds the public of the valor and dedication of officers like Fetherston, who served with honor and commitment to their communities.
