In a recent operation aimed at enhancing public safety, Fortitude Valley police apprehended a man found in possession of a tomahawk during routine patrols on September 16. The incident, which occurred at the intersection of Brunswick Street and Wickham Street, was part of a broader initiative under Jack’s Law to curb illegal weapon possession in the area. Upon being stopped by patrolling officers for a wanding check, the 27-year-old suspect admitted to carrying the weapon. Further investigation led to the discovery of prohibited substances including cocaine, methylamphetamine, cannabis, and testosterone, alongside paraphernalia related to drug use. As a result, the man faces multiple charges, including three counts of possessing dangerous drugs and possession of a knife in a public place. He is scheduled to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on October 14. Acting Patrol Inspector Michael Jones emphasized the ongoing commitment to maintaining safety in the Valley’s Safe Night Precinct. “Our proactive patrols are designed to detect and deter the presence of edged weapons. Community safety is a top priority, and we will continue to take all necessary actions to ensure it,” he stated. Statistics from the implementation of Jack’s Law highlight the effectiveness of these measures. Since April 2023, over 156,290 individuals have been scanned across Queensland, resulting in the seizure of more than 1,440 weapons. In North Brisbane alone, over 27,850 people have been scanned, leading to the confiscation of more than 230 weapons and over 720 charges related to offenses.
