Samsung has made an upgraded sleep apnea detection feature available on compatible Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Ring devices following regulatory approvals from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. The company said the update makes Galaxy Ring the first smart ring to offer sleep apnea risk detection.

Available through the Samsung Health Monitor app, the feature uses an enhanced algorithm to analyze users’ vital signs during sleep and identify breathing disruptions. Samsung said it provides more detailed information than its previous risk assessment, potentially helping users discuss concerns with health professionals.

The feature requires two nights of valid monitoring within a 10-day period and is designed for users aged 18 and older. Samsung said Galaxy Ring’s lightweight design may support consistent overnight use, while the low data requirement allows users to obtain results with limited monitoring.

The software-only medical application is currently available on Galaxy Watch 9 devices running Wear OS 7.0 or later, with support for Galaxy Watch 7 and 8 planned through future software updates. Samsung cautioned that the feature is not intended for people already diagnosed with sleep apnea and should not replace clinical diagnosis or treatment.
