A delegation from the European Parliament’s Regional Development Committee will visit Madeira from Sept. 21 to 23, 2026, to assess the challenges facing the Portuguese outermost region and examine how cohesion policy can support its development. The 10-member delegation, led by European Parliament Vice-President Younous Omarjee, will meet regional officials, business representatives and managing authorities. Discussions will focus on competitiveness, renewable energy, housing, transport infrastructure, maritime connections and the future of the European Union’s outermost regions strategy. During the three-day mission, members will visit EU-funded projects including the Serra de Água hydroelectric power plant, an affordable housing development in Câmara de Lobos and the Madeira Wine Company. The program also includes visits to Madeira’s Oceanic Observatory and the Ports Administration, as well as meetings with the president of the Legislative Assembly and the president of the Regional Government. Omarjee is scheduled to hold a press conference at Quinta Vigia in Funchal at 1:45 p.m. local time on Sept. 23.
