Gold Coast police have taken a 14-year-old boy into custody following the discovery of two knives during a proactive security screening at Helensvale train station. The arrest occurred as part of Operation Luminous, a focused initiative targeting crime hotspots and public transport hubs across the district during the school holidays.

The incident unfolded at approximately 2 pm on July 6, during a routine wanding operation. The operation was conducted as part of the broader Operation Forge, a statewide campaign aimed at curbing property crimes and managing serious repeat offenders. Authorities approached a group of male teenagers, and upon inspection, one youth admitted to carrying a knife. A subsequent search revealed a folding knife concealed in his waistband and a sheathed fishing knife attached to his left hip. Both weapons were confiscated, and the teenager, hailing from Pimpama, was processed under the Youth Justice Act for possessing and using a dangerous article.

Operation Luminous is an intensive policing effort that spans the entire Gold Coast during the school vacation period. The operation has seen police officers deployed to various key locations such as shopping centers, transport hubs, and central business districts to enhance community engagement, deter criminal activities, and ensure public safety. Since its commencement on June 27, the operation has yielded significant results with 372 wandings conducted, involving 245 juveniles and 127 adults. This has led to the confiscation of two knives and the charging of nine individuals with a total of 12 offenses.

Superintendent Brett Jackson emphasized the importance of the operation, stating, “Operation Luminous ensures a highly visible police presence where families, commuters, and young people gather, enhancing safety in public spaces during the school holidays. Removing knives from public areas reduces the potential for serious violence.” The operation is set to continue throughout the holiday period, maintaining a high level of police visibility and engagement in the community.
