NASA has officially appointed Sean Gallagher as the agency’s Chief Information Officer (CIO), a role vital for overseeing NASA’s extensive portfolio of Information Technology (IT) products and services. Gallagher, who has been acting CIO since January, will assume his new responsibilities effective immediately. According to NASA Deputy Administrator Matt Anderson, Gallagher’s leadership has been crucial in fortifying NASA’s IT foundations, ensuring that the workforce is equipped with secure, modern tools necessary for enabling daily groundbreaking missions. “As CIO, Sean will continue to advance our technology capabilities, supporting discovery, innovation, and mission success across NASA,” Anderson noted. Previously, Gallagher served as the deputy chief information officer for Operations at NASA Headquarters in Washington and as a senior advisor for Transformation. His role included servicing tens of thousands of end users both domestically and internationally, which has significantly enhanced NASA’s capabilities in data sharing, productivity, and overall mission facilitation. Gallagher’s experience spans various leadership positions, including CIO at NASA’s Glenn Research Center and roles at Booz Allen Hamilton and in the United States Army as a Signal Corps officer. Gallagher holds a bachelor’s degree in physics from John Carroll University and a master’s degree in computer information systems from the University of Phoenix. His diverse background and extensive experience in IT and leadership are expected to drive NASA’s strategic IT initiatives forward under his stewardship as CIO.
