In a significant meeting at this year’s G7 Summit in Évian, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Federal Chancellor of Germany Friedrich Merz discussed various strategic measures to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities amid ongoing conflicts. The leaders focused on enhancing air defense systems, increasing military supplies, and steps toward peace negotiations. President Zelenskyy expressed gratitude towards Germany for its pivotal role in supporting Ukraine, particularly in air defense improvements and protection against extensive military assaults. The dialogue between Zelenskyy and Merz included plans for additional air defense systems and missiles, alongside an assessment of current battlefield scenarios and the impacts of extended sanctions on Russia. Furthermore, the discussions extended to potential strategies to diminish Russia’s war efforts and bring them to the negotiation table. The two leaders also deliberated on the Drone Deal, Germany’s contributions to the PURL initiative, and collaborative ventures between Ukrainian and German companies in producing anti-ballistic systems. Special emphasis was given to the implementation of agreements made during the G7-Ukraine meeting held earlier that day. Additionally, President Zelenskyy acknowledged Germany’s support in Ukraine’s journey toward European Union integration, highlighting the recent decision by the EU to commence the first negotiating cluster for Ukraine and Moldova. This move underscores a significant step towards Ukraine’s integration with European structures, with Zelenskyy affirming the nation’s readiness to proceed with the remaining negotiations.
