In a recent address at the Bucharest Nine Summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for enhanced defensive collaboration among Northern and Central European countries in response to ongoing Russian threats. The President underscored the importance of preventing Russia from issuing ultimatums or destabilizing its neighbors, a stance clarified amidst the backdrop of Russia’s demands for NATO to revert to its 1997 borders.

During his speech, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the international support Ukraine has received in recent years, which has been crucial in countering Russian military aggression. He emphasized the critical need for the European support package of 90 billion euros, aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s defenses, including drone production, to be operational by early June. Additionally, Zelenskyy highlighted the importance of progressing Ukraine’s EU membership to send a strong signal against Russian geopolitical strategies.

Moreover, Zelenskyy discussed the upcoming NATO summit in Türkiye, stressing the necessity for it to project unity and strength within the Euro-Atlantic community. He also advocated for a more self-reliant European military capability, urging European countries to enhance their defense policies and production capacities collectively. The Ukrainian leader proposed the ‘Drone Deal’ at the EU level, emphasizing the need for bilateral agreements to effectively address modern threats using European production capabilities and Ukrainian defense expertise.

The address also covered the SAFE program, which aims to adapt European defense production to current and future challenges, ensuring that all European nations are well-equipped and resilient against threats. Zelenskyy concluded by reaffirming Ukraine’s commitment to diplomatic efforts and the importance of continuous pressure and negotiations to resolve the conflict with Russia.
