Europe Unites for Defense

At the Bucharest Nine Summit, held on May 13, 2026, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for stronger bilateral drone agreements to enhance European defense integration. The summit, which brought together leaders from Northern and Central Europe, focused on developing a unified defense strategy to counter potential threats, particularly from Russia.

President Zelenskyy emphasized the necessity of a collective European defense policy and capabilities that would fortify all member countries and their alliances, including NATO. He highlighted the immediate need for a European support package worth 90 billion euros, aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s drone production capabilities, marking a significant step towards Ukraine’s integration into the European Union.

The Ukrainian leader also stressed the importance of real-world combat experience and the rapid adaptation to modern warfare technologies. With Ukraine’s proven expertise in drone operations and defense tactics, Zelenskyy advocated for the expansion of defense programs such as SAFE and PURL, aimed at rearming Europe and enhancing civilian protection in Ukraine.

In addition to military strategies, Zelenskyy underscored the ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict with Russia, expressing gratitude for the international support, especially from the United States. He also called for the formation of an anti-ballistic coalition and clearer security guarantees under the Coalition of the Willing. The summit was attended by dignitaries from across Europe and representatives from NATO, highlighting a unified approach to regional security and defense.
