Two teenagers have been arrested in Cairns following a series of vehicle thefts that occurred overnight on May 4. The arrests were part of a larger crackdown under Operation Yankee Forge, targeting property-related crimes across Queensland.

Early on May 5, thirteen vehicles were reported stolen from various locations including Bentley Park, Woree, and several other neighborhoods. According to police reports, up to nine of these vehicles were seen driving dangerously in a convoy through Cairns. The spree culminated when a stolen red Toyota Yaris, involved in the convoy, rammed into a white Nissan Navara on the Bruce Highway around 7:45 AM. Fortunately, there were no physical injuries reported from the incident.

The Yaris was later found abandoned on Grove Street. Two teenage boys fled from the vehicle but were apprehended by the police a short distance away. An 18-year-old from Edmonton was charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle and possession of a knife in a public place. He is set to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on May 21. A 16-year-old from Bentley Park faces a similar charge and was denied bail, appearing in the Cairns Children’s Court on May 6.

Operation Yankee Forge continues to be a significant force in combating high-volume crimes such as vehicle theft and burglary. Since its inception on February 27, the operation has led to 348 arrests and over 800 charges. The initiative emphasizes enhanced police visibility and coordination, aiming to bolster community safety and reduce the number of victims affected by such crimes.
