Detectives in Queensland have charged 18 individuals in connection with a Goods and Services Tax (GST) fraud scheme on the Atherton Tablelands. The operation, known as Uniform Galician, was initiated in 2022 to investigate large-scale deceptions against government agencies and financial institutions. The accused collectively defrauded the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) of over $2 million.

Since the launch of Operation Uniform Galician, authorities have charged a total of 84 offenders in Cairns and Tablelands for defrauding the ATO of more than $8.5 million. The individuals facing charges range in age and are scheduled to appear in court to answer for their alleged crimes.

Among those charged are individuals from Mareeba, Tolga, Wongabel, Atherton, Tarzali, Kairi, Herberton, Normanton, Elimbah, and Mackay. The Queensland Police Service (QPS) emphasized their commitment to collaborating with government partners to combat such fraudulent activities.

The ATO’s Operation Protego played a significant role in uncovering the GST fraud, with authorities warning that those involved in such crimes will face consequences, including potential jail time.
