Mackay Police Crack Down on Speeding

Queensland police have charged nine people with drink- or drug-driving offences and issued 42 traffic infringement notices during two nights of targeted enforcement operations across the Mackay Whitsunday district.

Mackay Whitsunday Highway Patrol officers conducted high-visibility and covert operations as part of ongoing road safety efforts. Police performed 299 random breath tests and 16 random drug tests during the operation.

At about 10:30 p.m. on August 20, officers intercepted a motorcycle allegedly travelling at 121 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on the Bruce Highway at Glenella. A 33-year-old Ball Bay man was issued an infringement notice for exceeding the speed limit by more than 40 km/h.

The following evening, police stopped a motorcycle allegedly travelling at 151 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the Mackay Ring Road at Erakala. A 19-year-old Mount Pleasant man received a similar notice. Both men were fined $1,986, lost eight demerit points and had their licences suspended for six months.

Inspector Shelley Moore said police would continue targeted operations to identify and disrupt dangerous driving. The enforcement forms part of Operation Interpose, a Queensland-wide road safety initiative involving increased patrols and traffic enforcement.
