In an eventful plenary session on July 9, the European Parliament is set to address multiple pressing issues including the establishment of a digital euro and enhancements to the EU’s tax and fisheries policies. The session will also revisit measures for detecting child sexual abuse in digital communications.

The morning debates will begin with MEPs discussing the “EU Inc.” business model with Commissioner Dubravka Šuica, aiming to unify and streamline tax regimes to foster cross-border investment. Voting on this new tax system is scheduled for noon. Another significant discussion involves the future of the EU fisheries policy, where MEPs will consult Commissioner Costas Kadis on modernizing the fishing fleet and supporting the sector’s sustainability.

In addition to economic matters, the Parliament will deliberate on restoring a temporary derogation from the ePrivacy rules. This measure, which expired last April, would allow service providers to voluntarily scan for child sexual abuse material in private communications. The decision on this sensitive issue is also expected at noon.

Moreover, the assembly will vote on the potential negotiation with the Council regarding the digital euro, which could revolutionize how digital transactions are conducted within the EU. Other votes include resolutions on human rights and critical raw materials legislation.

This session underscores the European Parliament’s proactive approach in addressing diverse and complex challenges facing the Union, with live coverage available on the Parliament’s webstreaming site and EbS+. For more detailed insights, the public can access the Parliament’s newsletter.
