In a significant enhancement to its military capabilities, Ukraine has inked a deal with Sweden for the procurement of 16 advanced Gripen E fighter jets. The agreement, finalized on June 30, 2026, marks a pivotal shift in Ukraine’s air defense strategy. During a high-profile meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson, the two nations signed the procurement document, witnessed by top defense officials from both countries. Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine Sergiy Boyev and Director General of the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration Mikael Granholm were the signatories. The first delivery of the jets is scheduled for early 2029, financed through a European Union loan supported by the United Kingdom. The deal also encompasses aircraft equipment, technical assistance, and logistical support, with training for Ukrainian pilots and technical personnel already in progress in Sweden. Furthermore, as part of military aid, Ukraine will receive an initial batch of 16 Gripen C/D fighter jets by early 2027. The meeting also covered discussions on enhancing Ukraine’s combat aviation and air defense capabilities, including Sweden’s role in the PURL initiative and the forthcoming Drone Deal agreement. President Zelenskyy highlighted the successful operations of Ukrainian forces and discussed the ongoing preparations for winter and the path towards EU membership, with Sweden expressing strong support for Ukraine’s EU accession aspirations. Sweden’s commitment extends beyond military aid, as emphasized by President Zelenskyy, who thanked Sweden for its annual military packages and political support for Ukraine’s EU membership bid. The strengthening of ties between Ukraine and Sweden through this agreement is seen as a significant step in bolstering Ukraine’s defense and aligning more closely with European standards and support networks.
