In light of growing global crises, a sweeping majority of Europeans see the European Union (EU) as a beacon of stability and security, according to the latest Eurobarometer survey conducted by the European Parliament. The survey, which encompassed over 26,000 interviews across 27 member states, reveals a significant shift in public opinion, emphasizing the EU’s role as a stabilizing force amid geopolitical uncertainties.

The results, published on June 30, 2026, indicate that 75% of Europeans now view the EU as a stable haven, marking an 8% increase since the previous autumn. This sentiment is mirrored in the record-high perception of EU membership benefits, with 74% of respondents affirming the positive impact of their country’s inclusion in the union. This figure matches the previous high set in 2025 and is the highest since the question was first posed in 1983. Additionally, 68% of Europeans express a desire for the EU to take on a more significant role in safeguarding citizens from global crises and security threats.

European Parliament President Metsola highlighted the survey’s findings, stating, “At a time of global uncertainty, Europeans increasingly see the European Union as a beacon of stability. In a troubled world, that trust is Europe’s greatest asset. It comes with a clear expectation that we act decisively to deliver security, prosperity, and opportunity for our citizens.”

The survey also sheds light on the economic concerns prevalent among Europeans, with inflation being the top issue respondents want the European Parliament to address. Nearly half (47%) of those surveyed prioritize tackling inflation, a significant increase from previous surveys. On a broader scale, EU citizens are calling for more robust measures to enhance the union’s competitiveness and economic standing, alongside a push for greater defense capabilities and energy independence.

This comprehensive survey, carried out between April 9 and May 4, 2026, underscores the complex challenges facing the EU while also affirming the strong support among its citizens for deeper integration and cooperation in facing global challenges.
