In a swift operation by the Far North Tactical Crime Squad, three teenagers were arrested following the theft of a Toyota Kluger in Cairns, Queensland. The incident, which unfolded over the night of June 28, ended with the deployment of a tyre deflation device and subsequent arrests near Rutherford Street in the early hours of June 29. The stolen vehicle was intercepted at Yorkeys Knob before the suspects abandoned it and attempted to flee on foot. Police actions led to the quick apprehension of the three teenagers involved. Charges laid include multiple counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, house breaking, and possession of instruments used in break-ins. Additionally, one of the individuals was found carrying a knife in a public place. All three suspects, two aged 17 and one 16, were refused bail and appeared in the Cairns Children’s Court on June 30. The ongoing crackdown is part of Operation Yankee Forge, a six-month initiative focused on reducing high-volume and high-harm crimes such as vehicle theft and robbery across Queensland. Since its inception on February 27, the operation has seen significant results with 552 individuals charged with a total of 1367 offenses related to vehicle theft, robbery, and unlawful entry. The initiative underscores a robust approach by Queensland Police to bolster community safety and deter criminal activities through heightened police visibility and coordinated state-wide efforts.
