A significant operation led by the Spanish Guardia Civil and Policía Nacional, with support from Europol, has culminated in the arrests of nine individuals linked to an organized crime network. The operation targeted smugglers facilitating illegal migration from Algeria to Spain. The bust also led to the dismantling of the network, which had been coordinating the illegal transit of migrants to other parts of Europe, particularly France.

The investigation, unfolding over several months, pinpointed the criminal activities primarily within the Almería region. Authorities conducted multiple raids across local towns including Roquetas de Mar, Vícar, and Adra. These efforts not only resulted in arrests but also the seizure of EUR 43,000 in cash, 61 kilograms of hashish, high-powered boat engines, vehicles, large boats, weapons, and various forged documents. The operation revealed that the network had invested over half a million euros in assets to aid their smuggling operations.

Europol provided critical support, including operational analysis and expertise, which were instrumental in the success of the operation. This intervention aligns with new EU initiatives to combat the persistent threat of migrant smuggling. The establishment of the European Centre Against Migrant Smuggling (ECAMS) in March 2026 aims to enhance the systematic exchange of information and coordination across Europe. This center is part of broader efforts under the European Multidisciplinary Platform Against Criminal Threats (EMPACT) to strengthen cooperation against organized international crime impacting the EU.
