In a major international law enforcement victory, the notorious Atlantic cocaine trafficking route, often referred to as the ‘Cocaine Highway,’ has been significantly disrupted. This achievement stems from a coordinated operation spearheaded by the Spanish Guardia Civil and managed through Europol. The operation, which spanned from April 13 to April 26, 2026, targeted the illicit drug flow from Latin America to Europe, bypassing major ports using complex at-sea transfers. The joint task force seized a massive haul of 11 tonnes of cocaine and 8.5 tonnes of hashish. Additionally, 54 individuals were arrested, and eight vessels involved in these clandestine operations were intercepted. The operation focused on the eastern Atlantic corridor, strategically between the Spanish Canary Islands and the Portuguese Azores. Europol had previously identified a shift in drug trafficking tactics, with criminal networks increasingly avoiding traditional European ports. Instead, they moved onto fragmented maritime routes to minimize law enforcement detection. This operation was a direct response to that evolving threat. The two-week mission involved deploying maritime assets to detect, track, and intercept suspected vessels. This was a clear demonstration of heightened maritime coordination and cooperation among international law enforcement agencies. The collaborative effort included participation from Italy, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Europol provided crucial operational coordination, intelligence development, and analytical support. An expert from Europol was also deployed on-site in Spain to assist with the real-time processing of operational data as the maritime interdictions unfolded. This operation not only highlights the effectiveness of international cooperation in tackling drug trafficking but also sets the stage for further investigations and operations. Europol will continue to analyze the intelligence gathered to dismantle the broader network behind these operations, with further arrests and seizures expected as the investigation progresses. The success of this operation underscores the commitment of European law enforcement to combat organized crime and disrupt its operations across international waters.
