Glen Aplin, QLD – A fatal traffic accident claimed the life of a 92-year-old Wallangarra man and seriously injured an 85-year-old woman, police reported. The incident occurred on the afternoon of May 9 on the New England Highway south of Stanthorpe. Initial findings suggest that a blue MG ZS SUV, driven by a 20-year-old female, was heading south when she had to swerve abruptly to avoid a head-on collision with another car, which was driving on the wrong side of the road. Although the vehicles avoided a direct collision, the SUV struck a roadside culvert, rolled several times, and finally crashed into a power pole. The driver of the vehicle traveling on the incorrect side did not stop and fled the scene. The elderly male passenger was pronounced dead at the site of the crash, while the female passenger was rushed to Stanthorpe Hospital with life-threatening injuries and later airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital. The driver sustained minor injuries. Queensland Police’s Forensic Crash Unit is actively investigating the crash and is seeking any information regarding a light-colored sedan involved in the incident. They urge anyone who might have witnessed the erratic driving or possesses dashcam footage from the area around the time of the accident to come forward. In response to the increasing road fatalities, Queensland Police are intensifying their efforts under Operation Interpose, which includes heightened patrols and stringent enforcement of traffic laws across the state. The police emphasize that the responsibility for road safety begins with each individual driver and that reckless behaviors such as impaired driving, speeding, and not using seatbelts are unacceptable risks to community safety.
