Police in Toowoomba have arrested a 43-year-old man from Slacks Creek after discovering he was carrying a homemade firearm during a routine security check at a local hotel. The incident took place early in the morning on April 30, as part of the enforcement of Jack’s Law, aimed at curbing knife-related violence. The operation occurred around 12:50 AM when officers were conducting scans with metal detecting wands inside the gaming area of a hotel on Anzac Avenue. The suspect reportedly became uncooperative during the wanding process, leading to the discovery of the weapon after he threw an object from his pants. Authorities have charged the man with multiple offenses, including unlawful possession of weapons, carrying a loaded weapon in a public place, possessing explosives without authority, and obstructing police. He is scheduled to appear in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court on May 20. Jack’s Law was introduced after the tragic stabbing death of 17-year-old Jack Beasly in 2019. The law has since been expanded to allow police to use handheld metal detectors in various public settings such as transport hubs, entertainment areas, and community events. The initiative reflects ongoing efforts to enhance safety and prevent potential violence, ensuring that dangerous weapons are kept off the streets.
