Europol, in collaboration with Spanish and French authorities, has successfully dismantled a sophisticated migrant smuggling network operating across the Western Mediterranean. The operation, which took place on March 22 and 23, 2026, resulted in the arrest of 24 individuals and the seizure of various assets, including speedboats and high-end vehicles. The investigation, spearheaded by the Spanish National Police with support from France’s National Police and Europol’s newly established operational taskforce, targeted a network responsible for the dangerous and illegal transportation of migrants. This network, with strong bases in Almería, Spain, and connections in Marseille and Perpignan, France, engaged in multiple criminal activities to finance their operations, including drug trafficking, arms trafficking, and money laundering. The operation unveiled the network’s extensive logistical setup, which included the use of industrial buildings, speedboats, and a fleet of land transport vehicles. These assets facilitated the smuggling of migrants from Algeria to various Spanish destinations and onwards to Western Europe. The raids conducted during the operation led to the discovery of equipment used in smuggling operations, such as semi-rigid inflatable boats, marine GPS devices, and extensive amounts of fuel and tobacco. This successful operation highlights the ongoing commitment of Europol and European law enforcement agencies to combat migrant smuggling. The establishment of the European Centre Against Migrant Smuggling (ECAMS) in March 2026 underlines the EU’s strategic approach to disrupting criminal networks that exploit vulnerable migrants and pose significant security risks to the region. ECAMS aims to enhance coordination and information sharing among EU member states and associated agencies to effectively respond to migrant smuggling challenges.
