Europol, in collaboration with law enforcement authorities from Belgium, Ecuador, and the Netherlands, has successfully dismantled a major international drug trafficking ring linked to the notorious Los Lobos cartel. The operation, which began in January 2025, culminated in significant arrests and seizures, highlighting the effectiveness of international cooperation in combating organized crime.

The joint operation targeted a cocaine trafficking network operating out of Ecuador, using fruit exporting companies as a facade to smuggle large quantities of drugs into Europe. Throughout the operation, authorities seized approximately four tonnes of cocaine in multiple raids, including significant hauls in Vlissingen and Rotterdam, Netherlands, and various locations in Belgium.

The crackdown led to the arrest of 16 suspects, including a high-value target believed to be central to the network’s operations. Additionally, authorities conducted 26 house searches, seized six firearms, impounded several vehicles, and confiscated about $810 million in cash. These efforts disrupted not only the drug trafficking operations but also a sophisticated money laundering and corruption scheme associated with the cartel.

Europol played a crucial role by providing analytical support and facilitating the exchange of intelligence among the countries involved. The operation also benefited from the coordination of operational meetings and the deployment of Europol staff to strategic locations, enhancing the operational capabilities of the national forces.

This operation is part of a broader strategy by Europol to tackle the surge in cocaine trafficking between Latin America and Europe. With the support of various international projects and cooperation frameworks, such as the Global Drug Intelligence Network and the European Multidisciplinary Platform Against Criminal Threats (EMPACT), Europol continues to strengthen its approach to dismantling organized crime networks across Europe.
