Ukraine Urges Tougher Sanctions on Russia

In a recent address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for intensified sanctions targeting Russia’s energy trade and tanker fleet infrastructure amid ongoing Russian military strikes. The president emphasized the need for these measures to be particularly impactful as Ukraine continues to face severe challenges from Russian aggression.

Zelenskyy detailed the aftermath of recent attacks on Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia, which resulted in injuries to over 80 individuals and claimed four lives. Among the affected was the Strazhesko Institute of Cardiology in Kyiv, one of the country’s leading medical institutions, which suffered significant damage.

The Ukrainian leader highlighted the persistent Russian strategy of targeting energy facilities, aiming to plunge Ukraine into darkness as part of their military tactics. Zelenskyy called for a new sanctions package from Europe, urging swift and decisive actions to curb Russia’s offensive capabilities, particularly focusing on their tanker operations believed to be linked with drone activities against Europe.

In conversations with international allies, including the United States and several European nations, Zelenskyy stressed the importance of security guarantees and robust air defense systems to deter further aggression. He expressed gratitude towards countries contributing to Ukraine’s defense initiatives and underscored the necessity of international support in holding Russia accountable for its actions.
