In celebration of Multicultural Queensland Month, the Queensland Police Service (QPS) is highlighting the essential role of Police Liaison Officers (PLOs) in fostering community cohesion. Central to this initiative is PLO Maria Fakahau, whose efforts in Logan have significantly impacted local youth and community relations.

PLOs serve as vital connectors between Queensland’s diverse communities and the police service, promoting safety through mutual understanding and trust-building. PLO Fakahau, a prominent figure within the Tongan community, exemplifies this mission. Her dedication to cultural education and community engagement has been instrumental in resolving tensions and fostering inclusivity.

With a history of volunteering and a degree in Human Services, Fakahau has spearheaded the Pacific Islander Roots initiative, which supports disengaged students by grounding them in their cultural heritage. Through music, dance, and storytelling, the program has improved student attendance and behavior, while nurturing leadership skills and cultural pride among participants.

Fakahau’s initiatives have not only benefited the students but also strengthened relationships between schools, families, and the police, creating a ripple effect of trust within the community. Her work highlights the profound impact of cultural connection and education, marking her as a beacon of dedication and service in Queensland’s multicultural landscape.
