Queensland Police have charged 279 people with 1,006 offences since establishing the Tablelands Property Crime Unit in February, recovering almost $500,000 worth of allegedly stolen property across the region.

The unit, comprising plain-clothes and general duties officers, targets high-risk property offenders in Atherton, Mareeba and surrounding areas. On October 20, officers from the unit and the Tablelands Criminal Investigation Branch executed search warrants at a Palm Close property and a Reynolds Street shed.

Police allege they found a stolen .22 rifle, a stolen double-barrel shotgun, ammunition, stolen and cancelled number plates, drug utensils and three carpet pythons. The firearms were allegedly stolen from addresses in Malanda in 2016 and Dimbulah between 2025 and 2026. Investigations into the pythons are continuing.

A 46-year-old man was charged with three counts of possessing tainted property, two counts of unlawfully possessing category A weapons and possessing explosives without authority. He is due to appear in Mareeba Magistrates Court on November 23 and was also dealt with through a drug diversion. Detective Acting Inspector Tony Law said the unit would continue targeting property offenders across the Tablelands.
