Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held talks in Oslo with Norway’s prime minister, defense minister, defense company Kongsberg, parliamentary leaders and representatives of all political parties, focusing on military assistance, financial support and diplomatic efforts to end Russia’s war against Ukraine. During a meeting with Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Zelenskyy discussed coordinating further steps toward what he called a just peace. He thanked Norway for its support for Ukraine’s defense, economy, diplomacy and energy sector, while highlighting the importance of continued assistance from both European Union members and non-EU partners. Zelenskyy also met Defense Minister Tore Sandvik and Kongsberg CEO Eirik Lie to discuss additional cooperation, including NASAMS air defense systems. The Ukrainian president said the systems were protecting civilians and critical infrastructure from Russian missile and drone attacks, and said Ukraine expected further defense support packages next month. The talks also covered Norway’s involvement in the FREYJA European anti-ballistic program and the development of satellite communications capabilities for Ukrainian forces. In meetings with Storting President Masud Gharahkhani and party leaders, Zelenskyy raised Ukraine’s financial needs, defense budget shortfall and efforts to bring home Ukrainian children taken to Russia. They also discussed shelters for children during winter attacks. Gharahkhani said Norway’s parliament would continue supporting Ukraine and that political forces were united behind strengthening defense and assisting Kyiv.
