The Australian Communications and Media Authority is seeking public feedback on proposed rules that would strengthen and directly enforce consumer protections across the telecommunications sector. The draft Telecommunications (Consumer Protections) Industry Standard 2026 would replace the existing industry-developed code. It proposes stronger requirements for responsible sales, credit assessments, sales incentives, payment options, disconnections and remedies for consumers who are harmed. The proposed standard would also require clearer information before sales, improved mobile coverage disclosures and support for vulnerable consumers. It includes safeguards against unfair or erroneous disconnections and would give the ACMA stronger enforcement powers. ACMA Chair Nerida O’Loughlin said the authority had consulted consumer representatives and industry during the standard’s development. The six-week consultation is open until 10 November, with the draft standard, consultation paper and submission details available on the ACMA website.
