The European Parliament has adopted resolutions condemning alleged human rights violations in Hong Kong, Cuba and Zambia, calling for sanctions, investigations and stronger action from the European Union. MEPs urged the EU Council to impose sanctions on Hong Kong officials under the EU Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime. They cited the use of national security legislation, restrictions on media and expression, and the imprisonment of activists and political figures. The resolution passed with 459 votes in favour, 12 against and 86 abstentions. In its resolution on Cuba, Parliament condemned the treatment of political prisoners and called for the immediate release of Félix Navarro, his daughter Saylí Navarro and other detainees. MEPs also renewed their call to suspend the EU-Cuba Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement unless authorities take verifiable steps toward democratic reform. The resolution was approved by 374 votes to 198, with 19 abstentions. Parliament also called for an independent investigation into the August 2026 murder of Zambian opposition figure and former minister Mutotwe Kafwaya, as well as allegations of arbitrary arrests, intimidation and excessive use of force following the country’s elections.
