Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre discussed strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses, winter energy preparedness and upcoming diplomatic initiatives during a meeting in Oslo on Sept. 9, according to Ukraine’s presidential office. Zelenskyy briefed Støre on Ukraine’s need for interceptor missiles, particularly for Patriot air-defense systems. He also highlighted the importance of continued work on the FREYJA anti-ballistic program. The Ukrainian president expressed appreciation for Norway’s support, including its contribution through the PURL mechanism, which helps provide military assistance to Ukraine. The two leaders reviewed progress on the FREYJA program and agreed on further steps. The talks also addressed preparations for the coming winter. Norway provided significant energy assistance to Ukraine last year, and the leaders discussed Kyiv’s needs and Oslo’s ability to provide additional support. They also coordinated diplomatic priorities for the near future. Zelenskyy additionally expressed condolences over the reported death of King Harald V and said he planned to attend the farewell ceremony, citing Ukraine’s appreciation for the Norwegian royal family and people.
