The Queensland Police Service has announced the death of former Commissioner Steve Gollschewski AO APM following a battle with cancer. He died on September 4, 2026, prompting condolences from colleagues and police communities across Queensland. Acting Commissioner Brett Pointing described Gollschewski as a strategic and visionary leader whose career was marked by integrity, professionalism and a strong commitment to community safety. He said Gollschewski’s influence would continue to be felt across Queensland, Australia and internationally. Gollschewski served with the Queensland Police Service for more than 46 years, making him the third-longest-serving officer in the organisation’s history. He was appointed Queensland’s 21st police commissioner on April 22, 2024, and retired on February 20, 2026. The QPS extended its condolences to Gollschewski’s family, friends, colleagues and others who knew him. The service said further details would be released when appropriate.
