Six people have been charged with a total of 23 offences following a multi-agency crackdown on dangerous and antisocial jet ski behaviour on Brisbane River waterways. Operation Yankee Rooster ran from July 25 to August 9 and involved Queensland Police, Maritime Safety Queensland, Brisbane City Council and South Bank Corporation. Authorities intercepted 86 personal watercraft and issued 10 marine infringement notices during the operation. The alleged offences included common assault, serious assault, public nuisance, unauthorised property damage and marine safety breaches. Police said the operation followed reports of riders using modified, high-powered jet skis to spray passengers on ferries and charter vessels, people at ferry terminals and pedestrians on public walkways. Investigations are continuing into an incident on July 5 in which a couple and their four-month-old baby were allegedly sprayed while waiting at a ferry terminal. A 20-year-old Park Ridge man was intercepted at Colmslie Boat Ramp on August 1 following reports he had allegedly operated his jet ski close to boats to spray occupants. He was charged with seven offences, including four counts of common assault, two counts of serious assault of a person over 60 and one count of committing public nuisance. He is due to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on August 25. The operation used watercraft patrols, drones and CCTV networks to identify and track suspected dangerous behaviour. Police and Maritime Safety Queensland said personal watercraft operators must follow speed and distance requirements, maintain a proper lookout and avoid putting other waterway users at risk.
