Ukraine Outlines Defense and Security Plans

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a series of meetings and discussions on Aug. 14 focused on defense funding, sanctions over illegal grain exports, military production and international food security cooperation.

At a meeting of Ukraine’s defense and security staff, officials reviewed funding shortfalls and additional requirements for the autumn-winter period. Discussions included expanding production of advanced weapons, accelerating the development of strike capabilities and defensive systems, including jet-powered interceptors. Intelligence agencies also presented updated assessments of Russia’s plans, according to the presidential website.

Zelenskyy separately signed a decree approving sanctions against individuals, companies and vessels allegedly involved in the illegal export of Ukrainian grain. The presidential office also said Ukraine’s long-range sanctions strategy was continuing, while the country was increasing its use of medium-range strikes and expanding operations in response to Russian attacks on ports and cities.

In a phone call, Zelenskyy and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi discussed food security and bilateral relations. The conversation was included among a series of announcements published by the Office of the President of Ukraine on Aug. 14.
