Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with newly appointed UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting in Kyiv on Aug. 5 to discuss strengthening military cooperation and protecting civilians from Russian attacks. Zelenskyy thanked Streeting for making his first visit to Ukraine and praised the United Kingdom’s continued support. Streeting conveyed what he described as the British government’s broad and firm backing for Ukraine, saying he would meet with first responders, military personnel and civilians during the visit. The Ukrainian president said Russia’s latest large-scale attacks, including an overnight strike, underscored the need for stronger European support ahead of winter. He identified anti-ballistic defence as Ukraine’s immediate priority, warning that Russia plans to significantly increase ballistic missile production. The two officials also discussed opportunities for joint weapons production and sanctions targeting Russian companies involved in manufacturing ballistic missiles. Zelenskyy said efforts to weaken Russia’s military-industrial capacity were essential to limiting its ability to conduct missile attacks.
