Man Extradited in Bribery Case

A 39-year-old Chinese national has been extradited to Queensland and charged over an alleged attempt to bribe a Commonwealth public official during a business meeting in Camp Hill, police said.

Queensland Police Service, working with the Australian Federal Police and National Anti-Corruption Commission, alleges the man handed a woman a bag of tea on July 9 that was later found to contain $20,000 in cash. Investigators allege the attempted bribery was intended to secure a business advantage.

Detectives from the Upper Mount Gravatt Criminal Investigation Branch launched Operation Yankee Borderlands after the woman reported the incident. The man was arrested on July 24 while attempting to board a flight at Sydney International Airport.

A New South Wales court approved his extradition on July 25, and he was returned to Queensland that evening. He was expected to appear before Brisbane Magistrates Court on July 27 charged with one count of giving or offering a secret commission to an agent under section 442BA(b) of the Criminal Code.
